The future in firearms technology
VOERE developed as first company world wide a hunting rifle firing caseless ammunition with electrical ignition in 1991. One key element in this construction was the ignition of the cartridge via semiconductor.
In the meantime VOERE started to research about laser supported ignition. In 2005 VOERE patented worldwide the ignition of cartridges by laser. The trick was to reduce the size of a laser, strong enough to cut metall, from the size of a shoe box to the size of a finger. In the meanwhile we are working on this project for seven years, but our relation with lasers reaches further back as we were one of the first firearms manufactorers to mount a laser on a submachine gun as aiming device. The advantages are ecofriendly, by saving brass, but also safety-relevant, theft proof due to possible friend recognition, etc. and most importantly more precision due to fewer moving parts and vibrations.
During the development we had to overcome undue hardship. Scientific results in this area are scarce, and even exact measurements are next to impossible due to the high pressures and temperatures. . The ignition of a car engine happens on comparatively low pressure and temperature. For example laser beam as used in our development easily burns a hole in Sapphire glass (fusing point 2500°), lasers of this kind are normally used to weld or cut steel. Still this powerful laser is small enough to fit in a rifle bolt.
In the meanwhile we have tested and proven the reliable function of our laser ignition system. In this project we do not have support by Austrian governmental organisations. The project is financed privately.
